Should People go to Work, School or Daycare with a Cold?
By Natalie V.

The “common cold” causes more than l million deaths in the United States every year, that is a copious amount of people. Many people may think it is ok to go to school, work or daycare when they have just the “common cold”. I think that it isn’t ok to put yourself or others in danger of dieing because you make a bad choice. Why shouldn’t people go to work school or daycare with the “common cold”? That is the question I am going to answer.
The most common problems that occur when your body is trying to fight off the “common cold” are taking things to rapidly. If you think you can take a glut of medicine and go to work, school or daycare then you are very wrong. A cold usually takes one to two weeks to go away or “heel”. It may seem like an extensive amount of time but it will take even longer for your cold to “heel” it you don’t rest during those weeks. Anything that gets your heart going can trigger your cold to get worse. It is possible for your cold to turn into bronchitis or pneumonia, which are two deathly viruses. Germs are floating in the air in enclosed areas, going to an enclosed area and getting more germs in your system when you are trying to fight the cold you already have is when bronchitis or pneumonia takes over. Don’t put yourself or others in the position of possibly dieing, don’t go to work, school or daycare with a cold!
Another problem that can occur when you have a cold is what doctors call “the spreading”. Germs are viruses so they quickly spread from person to person. As soon as you have spread the cold to another person the person you have spread the germ to doesn’t yet realize that they are sick. They will most likely go and spread the cold to another person. It may seem absurd but if this cycle continues over twenty people could get sick in two to three hours. Not only are you just spreading the germ to others you’re also being inconsiderate. Because you felt the need to go to work, school or daycare with a cold and take the risk of making others sick you have put many other people’s life in danger. So don’t forget going to work, school or daycare with a cold isn’t only hurting you but it can hurt others to.
A problem that occurs when people have a cold is they have heard the saying “Tough it out when you’re sick”. If you have heard of this saying don’t use it! If you even run to work for just a quick hour you are “toughing it out” and that is making you even sicker although you don’t feel it. At a daycare, a school or a workplace germs will often spread quickly because people are in close contact with others. People touch their eyes and mouths that have your body’s germs all over them. Studies show that it is vital for you to wash your hands every hour you will be less likely to get sick. People will “wash” their hands once and hour but still get a cold. When you wash your hands you should use warm water and soap. Sing the happy birthday song to yourself while you are scrubbing your hands. When the song is over rinse off your hands in warm water. You can’t guarantee that a cold will not strike you but you can always try to prevent a cold.
Obviously colds are very serious and not anything to joke about. In today’s world colds can be deathly so they should be treated like they are deathly. Should people go to school, work or daycare if they have a cold? Your opinion may be different than mine but I think no. Don’t ignore a cold it could hurt you and others too!
